Hello SCLL Families:

With support from a generous sponsorship opportunity presented by the San Diego Padres, we are embarking on a two year program to renovate the infields at San Carlos Little League!

For the upcoming 2012 Spring Season, we are starting with the T-Ball Field and the Minors Field.  Over the years, heavy usage and the weather have taken their toll on these fields and it’s time to rebuild them.  We expect to spend approximately $15,000 getting the infields renovated to provide a safer and more fun place to play baseball, AND we will complete the work in time for THIS season!!

T-Ball Field
The renovation of the T-Ball field consists of removal of the uneven infield grass making it an all-dirt infield.  In addition we will be extending the infield area 4 feet into the outfield.   You may have noticed we already imported 50 tons of new state-of-the-art infield mix and will be laser-leveling the infield playing surface. We will also install new base anchors and a new home plate.

Minors Field
The Minors field renovation is also getting 50 tons of new state-of-the-art infield mix and laser-leveling of the playing surface.  We are extending the infield approximately 5 feet into the outfield and the old (and very hard) pitcher’s mound will be removed and rebuild it with new clay materials. We are installing new base anchors and a new home plate.  The work will also include extensive reworking of the existing infield grass surface to create a flatter and more consistent playing surface that will ready for play this season.

Future Plans
Contingent on the continued support of the San Diego Padres sponsorship program (and our own generous SCLL Sponsors!), we plan additional improvements in the coming years.  These wish-list items include:

  • Renovation of the Majors field similar to the Minors improvements (estimated cost $8,000)
  • Renovation of the Caps/Rookies field similar to the T-ball improvements (estimated cost $6,000)
  • Rebuild the score booths for the Minors and Majors fields (estimated cost $8,000)
  • Install shade over the Minors bleachers (estimated cost $3,000)
  • Install equipment storage lockers at each the field for bases, chalk, etc. (estimated cost $2,500)
  • Purchase a new/used lawn mower (estimated cost $1,500)
  • New score boards for the Minors and Majors fields (estimated cost $4,000)

History of this Opportunity
This sponsorship opportunity was presented to all the leagues in District 33 and most of them chose to participate.  After months of discussions with district officials and San Diego Padres representatives, your SCLL Board graciously accepted the offer and the work you see happening on the fields is a direct result of the benefits of this program.

Many thanks to Angela Engquist and Robert Burner for their leadership, and the continuing  hard work of the Fields crew, Dean Bettencourt and Pete De Luca, to get this project up and running for 2012!

Thank you San Diego Padres!  Let's Play Ball . . . Go SCLL!!!

2012 Big Al Coaching Clinic
January 27th and 28th 2012

 Big Al Coaching Clinic Flyer

District 33 is proud to host the 2012 "Big Al" Coaching Clinic featuring Al Price and his son Scott. Al's teaching philosophy comes from decades of experience he has culminated over the years into this comprehensive, easy-to-follow approach to learning the fundamentals of baseball, softball and tee ball. Scott, (Al’s son) will assist at the clinic and brings a fresh new perspective to the training after playing college baseball in Texas and graduating with his Kinisiology and Teaching degree. Each component of the program ties together principles of learning that have proven effective time and time again. Al and Scott have distilled their knowledge in a way that makes it easy for kids, parents and coaches to learn. Here's how he does it, in a nutshell: All the fundamental skills are clearly identified. Each skill is broken down into a series of simple, straight forward steps presented in a learnable progression. Skills are presented in a creative and motivating manner that is easy for anyone from the novice to the more experienced to follow. Above all, he never forgets that the game is supposed to be active - and fun. Big Al's Teach it – Try It – Game It approach has helped both new and experienced coaches build Little League teams with a solid foundation of basic skills. Take advantage of this great, well-planned program: do it for the kids! Al and Scott have developed a complete series of instructional resources that match the clinic instruction.  The resources were reviewed and approved by Little League International in the spring of 2010.  To learn more about the resources and to order online please go to www.bigalbaseball.com.  The resources will also be available for purchase at the clinic sessions.

This is a free clinic to everyone in District 33. You can register on-line or at the door for each clinic. We are asking for all members of our local leagues board of directors that have not attended a coach’s clinic to please attend this one. D33 requires that all managers and coaches attend both a coaches and a safety clinic every 3 years. Every team must have a coach that has attended a coaches and a safety clinic in 2012 in order to participate in our TOC. These clinics fulfill the D33 coaches’ clinic requirement. Parents are welcome to attend as well.

All participants should wear sneakers and bring a glove (if possible). This is a hands on clinic, but not physically hard. All adults are welcome whether they have a glove or not!  If you have any questions, please contact Ned Kern at
